Deepwater Theatrelogo artwork - Kitty Mitchell Adjacent to our store is Deepwater Theatre, Ocracoke Island's first and only purpose-built entertainment & performance venue. The building is open-sided but screened-in with a tin roof, and seating for about 70 people comfortably inside (and a further ~30 seats outside the roof cover and screening). There is a full PA system with excellent acoustics, and great viewing of the raised stage from every seat. The emphasis at Deepwater Theatre is on fun family live entertainment. View some PHOTOS here. Schedule & Information Deepwater Theatre is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year for the famous Molasses Creek shows at least twice a week. The Ocrafolk Opry also performs weekly during this time, with up to 20 talented local performers collaborating in a uniquely memorable evening. Noah Paley is also a regular performer. For information about the Summer Concert Season 2001, please call (252) 928-4280, email molasses@beachlink.com, or check out the Molasses Creek web site for details. Deepwater Theatre can be hired for specific purposes. The seating can be rearranged or removed totally (as can the screens) for different artistic/performance purposes. If interested, then please call Christina at (252) 928-7472 or email christina@deepwaterpottery.com. To date, the following events have been held at Deepwater Theatre:
Location Deepwater Theatre is located on School Road next to Deepwater Pottery towards the School, and at the end of Howard Street. History The site of the present-day Deepwater Theatre used to belong to the local artist and character, JoKo. He set up a trailer where he would paint (some of his paintings can be seen in the Ocracoke Preservation Museum), built around this site and then created an aviary where he kept wild birds. Christina moved into the site after JoKo left Ocracoke. She expanded the buildings on the site, moved in a kiln and pottery studio while developing Deepwater Pottery, and then decided to develop an outdoor theatre. Christina worked with David Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, Kevin Hardy, Jason Eric Booth and Cynthia Mitchell to build the deck and basic structure of the current theatre site. This has been greatly expanded over the years, with the help of many more friends, including Steve Austin, Amy Borland and friends, Roger Meacham, Wes Lassiter and Warner. It is now the main stomping ground of Molasses Creek, and many performing friends. Thanks to all of our patrons over the years for your continued support of the performing arts. |
