Hurricane Floyd (Sept 1999)

As it was heading North towards Ocracoke, Floyd was a category 5 hurricane. Having just survived the ravages of Hurricane Denis, just 10 days prior, much of Ocracoke was still underwater. Floyd looked potentially fatal, and many Ocracoke residents evacuated from the island for the first time ever.

Hurricane Floyd passed closest to Ocracoke Island around 15 September 1999. It came onland just south of Morehead, and headed out to sea again around the NC/Virginia border.

Floyd caused devastation on mainland North Carolina. Many lives and livelihoods were lost in the Piedmont. Most Ocracoke residents who evacuated faced a long, drawn out return to the Island, through many flooded areas.

However, Ocracoke Island was lucky to survive Hurricane Floyd. There was not much damage to property. However, one casualty was the famous Pony Island Motel horse, who had survived Hurricane Dennis. Thankfully, the horse was down for only a couple of weeks, and has now been returned to his former glory.
